Florence residents seeing discolored water after system disturbance, city says

FLORENCE, S.C. (WBTW) — Some residents in Florence are dealing with discolored water after interruptions at the plant created a disturbance of the water system, the city said Tuesday in a news release.

While preparing for scheduled maintenance, a by-pass pump was being installed on Monday at the surface water treatment plant, the city said. During that process, interruptions in flow at the plant resulted in hydraulic changes that impacted the quality of the water.

To prevent similar issues in the future, city officials worked together and will have a licensed utility contractor perform maintenance to install a new 36-inch diameter valve from July 1-3 at the Frank E. Willis Pee Dee Regional Water Treatment Plant. The city said the valve controls the facility’s ability to distribute water and supply its water system.

The city said while it anticipates the repairs to only take a few days, potential delays could still happen. During the repairs, water production volume will not change, but unforeseen events like fires or water main breaks could strain services and cause low pressure.
