Out with the old, in with the new! Whether you are ready or not, 2014 is here. Let's all hope that 2013 was a good learning opportunity for all of us. From Obamacare snafus to Newtown to Miley Cyrus twerking to Myrtle Beach Football & Socastee Tennis State Championships to Duck Dynasy debacles and more, we have had ample opportunities to learn much about ourselves. They say that in order to know what will happen in the future you must study and learn from the past. 2013 was a pretty good year for us here on the Hot Talk Morning Show. We had the pleasure of working with Kristine Ward for the first part of the year, and now our new co-host Liz Callaway is stuck with dealing with me and Dave.... ;-) I have learned that if 2014 is anything like 2013, I am in for another interesting ride....... HAPPY NEW YEAR!
The cat has been let out of the proverbial bag, so to speak, about the latest employer to announce they are opening up for business soon on the Grand Strand! Earlier today, Startek, Inc., a worldwide provider of business process outsourcing services, is opening up a new customer support center. This will create as many as 665 new jobs in our area over a 5-year period, resulting in an annual economic impact exceeding $45 million dollars (according to local experts). They are also investing $10 million in the construction of a 50,000 sq. foot facility in Carolina Forest that is scheduled to be completed next fall. Until then, they will set up temporary operations in a spot provided by Horry-Georgetown Tech. The company will begin hiring in January. Kudos to Brad Lofton & the MB Regional Economic Developement Corporation, County Council, and others for working together on this effort. Keep up the good work, folks !!!!!
FNB Stadium in Johannesburg, South Africa is the site of a massive celebration and memorial for the late Nelson Mandela. Over 100 world leaders are expected to attend, including President Obama, Cuban President Raul Castro, China's Vice President Li Yuanchao, and over 100,000 citizens of the world. Although police promise tight, heightened security, reports say that the first crowds that entered the stadium did so without any security screening or searches. Oh, boy. The Secret Service are happy about that....NOT. Perhaps the best security the President and others can count on are the fact that Cuba and China have leaders there as well. I doubt the terrorist scumbags want to stir up those two countries by pulling a stupid act while they are in there........hmmmmmm.
So, you went shopping on Black Friday (or maybe you couldn't wait and went on Brown Thursday) and saw first hand the best of the American spirit on display ! Like people re-creating an MMA cage match in the middle of your local WalMart because someone got the last set of matching mauve bath towels. Or perhaps you were witness to one shopper being tazed by another Black Friday zombie shopper because they took the last 50 inch Samsung flat screen in the joint. Or maybe you saw two disgruntled shopaholics get into a shooting match with another over an X-Box incident. Oh, you didn't see any of those things? Lucky you. Those type of scenarios played out across our great land last week and there was plenty of video evidence to display such hideous human interaction on the media outlets worldwide. I'm sure you are as proud as I am to see such honorable displays of Americana splayed across the world's media outlets. Bravo!
The holiday season officially begins this week with Thanksgiving on Thursday. Turkey, dressing, football, relatives, pumpkin pie, the whole ten yards. But don't forget to stop and reflect on all the things you should be thankful for. Be sure to acknowledge those who make your life better, those who love you, those who make living worthwhile. Be sure to show appreciation to everyone who helps make your world a better place. After all, it's true that you can never be told thanks enough. So I want to say thanks to my lovely bride Teresa, my wonderful kids JP & Jessica, my mom, sister & brother, all my friends, my co-hosts Dave & Liz, and to you for being a faithful listener :-) Happy Thanksgiving!!! And save me a slice of that pie, will ya'.......
I want to congratulate and wish the best of luck to the football teams from our region who are playing tomorrow night in the 3rd round of the high school football playoffs. In Class 3-A, the Socastee Braves will be hosting Marlboro County at Braves Stadium, while the Myrtle Beach Seahawks have to travel across the state to face perennial powerhouse Strom Thurmond. In Class 2-A, the Loris Lions visit Timberland. Let's wish all three teams the best of luck! Furthermore, if the chips all fall right, we could end up with a rematch of Loris & Dillon for the 2-A Lower State championship as well as Socastee facing Myrtle Beach for the second time this year at Braves Stadium! Keep your fingers crossed, and get out there and support your local teams!
