Human beings are creatures of habit. Whereas some people might look at doing the same thing everyday as being stuck in a rut, most people look at it as being familiar and in a groove. People are comfortable with what's familiar to them and change is a dirty word. Change means you have to think. Change means you have to work. Change means you have to come up with a new way to do approach your day to day life. So even though we intrinsically know that the way we think or act may not be the best or most efficient....it's the easiest.
However, some people think that as time goes on and we age, we're supposed to change. I've had people call me over the years and tell me that when I get a little older and wiser, I'll come over to their more conservative way of thinking. Actually, as I've gotten older, I see more clarity in some of the more liberal ideas I hold dear. I can't see any scenario where I'll suddenly become a conservative because I hit some milestone on the calendar. Why should people be expected to change anyway? The hippies and flower children of the 60s and 70s and now in their 60s and 70s. These people were all about free love, drugs and bucking the establishment. Now they decry the state of our country because of 'those kids today'. Hello? You were those same kids when you were a kid. Adults also complain about what kids today wear or listen to and how disrespectful they are to authority. Hello? You did the same thing. As a matter of fact, kids have been doing it for centuries. I've seen letters written through history dating back to ancient Greece where adults are saying that the 'youth of today' will be the ruination of society as we know it and yet, we're still here.
Change is tough, but sometimes necessary...although there are times when change is out of the question.
